Is it legal to play online poker in the US?

I'm a better poker player than I am a lawyer. So I wouldn't want you to completely trust everything I say on this topic. However, I've been involved with online poker for years, so I'm just going to give you my opinion on playing poker on the the Internet in the US anyway.

Aside from a few states (see below), it appears to be perfectly legal to play online poker for real money in the US. Thousands of American players play online poker for real money every week. No players have ever been arrested.

If online poker is was illegal, the online poker rooms would not be accepting US players. US-facing rooms are vigilant about staying on top of the law. So unless the poker rooms prevents you from creating an account, you are good to go.

It is safe to play online poker in most US states, which is why we have these US friendly poker rooms. If you would like further reassurance from a legal expert in this area, read this article by I. Nelson Rose.

The UIGEA.

The UIGEA was passed in September 2006. It stands for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and it was attached to the SAFE Port Act. Official details can be found between 31 USC § 5361 and 31 USC § 5367.

Contrary to what some people believe, this did not make online poker illegal. It simply made it a little more difficult to process transactions to and from online poker rooms and online casinos. It does not make the act of playing poker online for real money illegal, so it's not aimed at you.

Michigan’s Gun Lake Casino, one of about two dozen tribal casinos sprinkled around the state, unveiled a poker room on Sept. 14.

The room, which joins about 40 other card rooms in the state, employs about 100 people, according to the casino. Gun Lake Casino announced plans for the room back in May.

The state of Michigan is home to tribal, commercial and charitable card rooms.

The Gun Lake Casino room occupies space that was once leased by the Johnny Rockets and Villa Pizza eateries, which includes 3,500 square-feet in space. The Gun Lake Tribe performed “extensive research to determine market demands” for poker, a press release said.

“We are thrilled to offer this new amenity to our guests,” commented Sal Semola, president & chief operating officer for Gun Lake Casino. “The Gun Lake Tribe has done an incredible job listening to our guests and community, which this new poker room is attributed to.”

Kings Room Grand Rapids

The tribe and the casino are also working toward opening a 475,000 square-foot parking structure, which was announced at the end of 2017.

Gun Lake Casino, located about 25 miles south of Grand Rapids, opened in 2011 and has steadily been expanding since. In 2016, the tribe announced plans for a $76 million expansion, a project that included additional slot machines and table games. The poker room came later.

The largest poker room in the state (22 tables) belongs the FireKeepers Casino. Detroit, which is home to the state’s three commercial casinos, has a handful of card rooms. The largest are MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino with 17 tables apiece.

Imagine 50 houseboats totaling over 200 bedrooms lined on a single dock exclusively for Poker Run participants and an adjacent dock with 125 of the most incredible power boats in the country. During the Poker Run, that’s State Dock.

The ability to stay where you play makes the State Dock experience unique. With 2 huge docks normally used to moor a rental fleet of over 80 houseboats, State Dock is converted into a Poker Run Paradise. Last weekend’s Lake Cumberland Poker Run presented by State Dock in Kentucky proved once again that the success of any given poker run isn’t necessarily about acquiring cards at various stops on the water in the hope of bringing in a winning hand. With the better part of two days to collect their cards, participants in this year’s 160-plus-boat fleet of high-performance catamarans, V-bottom sportboats enjoyed the run itself at their own leisurely pace, often traveling to stops in small and sometimes brand-specific groups.

According to participants ranging first-timer Jay Anthony Cooke from Toronto, Canada, to veteran Wayne Schaldenbrand of longtime event sponsor Sunsation Boats, there was no sense of urgency when it came to the run. But the Friday and Saturday night celebrations in the houseboat community at State Dock? And the expansive post-run, Saturday afternoon raft-up on Harmon Creek? No one wanted to miss a minute of those Lake Cumberland Poker Run traditions.

“Friday night on houseboat row was packed with people and a DJ and a full dance floor,” said Cooke, who traveled to the event and spent most of his time with a group of fellow Canadians, as well as folks from Michigan and Wisconsin. 'On Saturday afternoon after we got our last card, we went to the Harmon Creek raft-up. There were literally hundreds of boats on the water. It took us an hour to tour through and see all the parties and, well, other entertainment. We’ll leave it at that as this is a PG article. On Saturday night, we’re back on houseboat row with the DJ and the dance floor party.”

Wheel of Fortune is a British television game show based on the American show of the same name created by Merv Griffin. Contestants compete to solve word puzzles, similar to those used in Hangman, to win cash and prizes. Unlike the American version, where the numbers on the wheel correspond to the amount of money won by each contestant, the British version instead referred to these amounts as 'points' – they had no cash value, their only purpose was to determine the grand finalist, or to choose a winner for a particular round. The Mescalero Apache Tribe announced today a partnership with William Hill, a sports betting company, to open a sports book this summer at Inn of the Mountain Gods.

William Hill will provide its proprietary technology to power the daily sports betting operations at the casino including innovative wagering technology, betting kiosks, and the InPlay wagering menu.

The new sports book will be located in a newly renovated space between the Big Game Sports Bar and the Apache Spirit Club. The opening date will be prior to the new football season this fall. The room will feature high-top seating and 43-inch televisions.

Last week a celebration was held for the new luxury spa at Inn of the Mountain Gods.

The design of the spa was inspired by the Mescalero tribe's culture. There is use of warm color tones and soft lighting that makes for a tranquil space for guests. Signature services and treatments will be offered adding to the upscale atmosphere of the spa.

Guests can choose treatments for cellulite, deep pore cleaning, and massages for couples. The salon will offer full service treatments. There will be nail care, waxing, and hair care services.

The Inn of the Mountain Gods is the only southern New Mexico resort given a four diamond rating by AAA.

The obvious answer: keep playing until you win. Keep in mind that there is a good chance that the amount you win will usually be less than the total amount that you lost up to that point, but if everybody won, then the casinos wouldn't bother having the machines in the first place.

The more money it costs to play a machine, the 'looser' the machine can be and still make enough money for the casino to keep the machine there. Look for progressive slot machines that 'must hit by' some number. If they are close to hitting, pound them to death.
Understand that your overall likelihood of winning is not great. Other games in the casino often have a much lower HA. But, don't forget to factor in various casino comps, such as free slot tournaments, free drinks, free (or discoiunted) meals, and perhaps even free nites in the casino hotel. Soaring Eagle begins major hotel renovation

January 8, 2020

A major renovation of all 516 hotel rooms at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort began this week.

As a first phase, the rooms on the sixth and seventh floors are being demolished and replaced with new construction. All plumbing, heating and air conditioning will be new. These rooms will reopen in August 2020.

During the same timeframe the front desk and administrative areas will be demolished and replaced by new construction.

When floors six and seven are finished, the renovation will continue for another two years to include the guest rooms on the remaining floors. Final completion is scheduled for mid-2022.

A multi-million dollar renovation to the casino was completed in September 2018. That project added a non-smoking slots area, a high stakes and VIP lounge, the ASCEND restaurant, and a re-designed Kid's Quest & Cyber Quest.
